Redeemer Lutheran resolved to increase its role in community ministry in 2011. As a small congregation, we sought partners from other nearby congregations. Trinity Presbyterian Church accepted the invitation, and together our congregations agreed to sponsor community workshops focused on the needs of older Oklahomans, with special emphasis on the northeast Oklahoma City neighborhoods near our congregations. After our first workshop (April 20, 2012), a small grant from the Indian Nations Presbytery was awarded to continue this community outreach. We subsequently adopted the name of ‘The Community Alliance for Healthy Aging’ to be inclusive of other area congregations such as New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church and public organizations that have assisted in planning.
Our next workshop will be our 11th event, and is entitled, “Medical Marijuana – Separating the Facts from the Hype.” Information from medical professionals will respond to a growing concern among seniors regarding potential therapeutic benefits of marijuana products. Another topic will address benefits available through the Social Security Administration.
The seminar will be held Thursday, October 24, 2019 at the Oklahoma City County Health Department NE Regional Health and Wellness Campus, 2600 NE 63rd Street, Oklahoma City, OK. Registration opens at 8:30 AM; sessions are between 9 AM and noon; pre-registration is not necessary. The event is free of charge; a continental breakfast and light refreshments will be provided. All interested individuals are encouraged to attend. For more information, leave a message at Redeemer Lutheran Church (405-427-6863) or e-mail us at agingseminar@gmail.com.
